http://www.miscositas.com. It has stories and lesson plans in French, English, Spanish, and other languages, along with options for either reading a story as an electronic book (page by page) or watching the story and hearing it narrated. One great story to use is
"Gringuito" a Chilean film about a boy who moves back to Chile with his family after growing up in New York--works well as part of Unit 2 or Unit 3 because students can compare elements of his life and that of the fruit vendor he befriends, along with narrating his rather colorful adventures in Santiago.
"Road to El Dorado" animated Pixar film about conquistadors looking for gold in the New World. Great springboard for exploring how legends begin and how they connect to real-life events.
Instructional Strategies
Examine and discuss different types of narration: myths and legends, folk tales and fables, & personal anecdotes or stories. Identify elements of each in terms of the types of characters, whether they serve to entertain, to explain how something came to be, or to teach a lesson.
Read-aloud of "Ana's Story", the true story of a girl in the Caribbean who deals with the challenges of poverty, education, family instability, and the fact that she was born HIV-positive. After I read one section aloud (in English) each day, the students write a one-sentence summary of what happened in that section of the story. Gradually, they create a full summary of the entire novel.
